Pastor - Father Joseph C. Simmons

Father Simmons grew up in Baltimore.  He was one of 4 boys in his family.  He attended St. Brigid School in Canton being taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.  He then attended Mount St. Joseph High School where he was taught by the Xaverian Brothers.  After high school he attended St. Charles College in Catonsville .  Two years later, Archbishop Keough sent him and one other seminarian to the Grand Seminary of Saint Brieuc in Brittany, France which housed sixty French and ten American seminarians.
In 1958, while attending the World’s Fair in Brussels, he met his lifelong friend, Father James Cosker who visits Joppa from Scotland almost every year.

During his studies, Father Simmons was able to spend two weeks in Lourdes, France.  He was ordained on May 27, 1961 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore.  His assignments included 7 years at St. Matthew in Baltimore, 7 years at St. Patrick in Cumberland, 2 years at St. Francis of Assisi in Baltimore and 5 years as chaplain at the University of Maryland Hospital.  In October 1982 he became pastor of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Joppa, Maryland.  Shortly after arriving at Holy Spirit, Father Simmons was tasked with building a new church for the parish.  After a successful fund drive, a new church opened in 1988 and masses would be offered in the new church instead of the building which came to be designated as the Parish Center.  After celebrating 30 years of service at Holy Spirit, Father Simmons also considers one of his major accomplishments the completion of the new Parish Center in 2012 which replaced the former building lost to fire.  Father Simmons hopes the new Parish Center will serve to reunite the parishioners and with the new programs that can now be offered, provide a spark to rejuvenate our Faith and our religious as well as social activities.

Sister Susanne Bunn - Director of Faith Formation for Children and Youth

Sister Susanne grew up in a row house in South Baltimore between Fort McHenry and the Inner Harbor and spent summers on Stoney Creek.  She has two brothers, Bill and Jay, and thinks their teasing was the best preparation for working with priests.  After attending public school, she commuted to Notre Dame of Maryland University.  After-school and summer jobs included salesgirl at Hutzlers, waitress at Ocean City and Social Security rep in Rocky Mount, NC.  In 1964, she entered the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart.  Assignments included Winston Salem, NC; Cortez, CO; Lexington, KY; Miami, AZ; San Antonio, TX; Washington, DC; Brockway, PA and Lanham, MD.  The Mission Helpers take a personal dedication.  Sister Susanne’s is “of the Good Shepherd”.  Jesus loves and cares for each one of us.  He holds us in his Heart.
